What is a Fixie Bike?

A Fixie Bike is basically a fixed-gear bike.  The cog on a Fixie Bike does not incorporate a ball bearing system like on traditional bikes, so the wheel on a Fixie Bike cannot spin independently, therefore you cannot freewheel on a Fixie Bike.  (A cog is the gear on the rear wheel that the chain goes around.)

In other words, the rear wheel on a Fixie Bike is directly tied to the motion of the pedals.  That is, if you pedal forwards, the bike moves forward or if you pedal backwards, then the bike moves backwards.

Advantages of Fixie Bikes

Because Fixie Bikes incorporate fewer parts, they are much lighter with increased maneuverability over traditional bikes.

People who ride Fixie bikes feel more at one with their bike, with more direct power and control.  Many people enjoy performing “tricks” with their Fixie bike thanks to its lightness, speed and improved maneuverability.

The lightness of a Fixie Bike means that less energy is expended by the rider compared to a more traditional heavier bike.

Incorporating less parts, Fixie Bikes are easier to maintain and more mechanically efficient, with less to go wrong than a traditional bike.

Flip-flop Hub Option

If you’re not entirely sure about a Fixie or Fixed Gear Bike, some manufacturers incorporate a Flip-flop Hub option into their fixed gear bikes, so you can choose whether to use the bike as a Fixed gear bike or as a freewheel bike (usually single speed).

The Flip-flop Hub offers a fixed cog as well as a second cog with a freewheel bearing system so you can switch between the Fixed gear system or coasting (rolling without having to pedal all the time).

Switching between fixed gear or single speed is usually just a case of simply flipping the rear wheel.
